Bikes been sitting for a few weeks. Measured the DCV of the battery and it's 12.4 and it's not that old so i don't think its that. But it makes this sound each time i hit the starter. What u r hearing is a click that happens each time i hit it, not a bunch of clicks with one button push. Any idea what the issue may be? Cold morning but then it's not mid west cold here in central cali. Link
edit: actually i just tried it again and it DOES happen one after another if i just hold the starter. I wonder if it may be the console connector because the lights kinda flicker each time it make that sound. Have to check that later on, but mean while any thoughts are welcome.

Well, somehow i thought it could have to do with the cold and maybe it was because later in the day when it warmed up it started instantly.

Sounds like Pelosi getting hammered....

Solenoid? I recall contacts being a Harley starter fix.

Solenoid was my first thought but i've dealt with that before and never heard such loud clunks like that. It's usually just the clicking sound of contacts not holding. Not sure how, but i think it was related to the cold. I rarely or never start the bike when it;s really cold like that.

Well, i got a deltran Jr charger/ maintainer and t charged up fully and it still does it tho it alternates between starting and that banging sound. So it apparently isn't the battery and that bang just seems too loud to be the solenoid tho maybe this particular one is just loud, i dunno. Anyone hear a solenoid that when bad is 5 times as loud as the usually clicking sound?

Sounds like the starter motor to me, bendix engaging disengaging really slowly. Have your battery load tested, check all the usual battery connections and main cables to the starter , plus the starter relay. This is where the manual push starter button is so handy, proves things straight away, Fast Eddy sells them.

I think it's a combination of very cold days and not having ridden it for a longer period than i have ever gone, probably 6 weeks. So the battery was low and the combination of that and the cold was causing it even tho i can't say why that sound would have been there. In any case it started right up today. And the thing is, i rode a lot before i stopped due to weather and it would just turn right over with never any odd sounds. So it seems like a hell of a coincidence that it went from perfection in starting while i was riding daily to hard to start and that slamming noise after sitting for a long time and super cold weather if something is actually broken like the starter. In other words,, it would be quite the coincidence it broke right after my many summer months of daily riding. So whatever that noise was i think it was related to a combination of a low battery and a cold garage. (it gets CRAZY cold in there)

This could very well be the pinion gear not being able to engage the gear on the clutch.

If the gear is in an odd position, the pinion gear just hammers into the flank of the gear wheel.

Try put the bike in 3rd gear, move the bike and turn the motor a bit.

Might help

\Are u saying that is damage or just a fluke. Because u r saying to move the engine but i already did by starting it yesterday. Or are u saying to do that IF AND WHEN it does this again?

Actually Daz that is quite common for a battery that is used every day for commuting, the person then goes on a short holiday, comes back and the battery has given up. Proper load testing will always show the health of a battery.

Ya know, i also find that on cold morning which are always far colder in the garage, but even in the house i have to warm up my TV remote with a hair dryer or it won't work. It will not turn the TV on at all till i turn it over and blast the battery compartment with hot air for about 15 seconds. That was one reason i thought the cold could be part or all of the issue.

By the way, i read that if you fill and charge a new battery without waiting for around 24 hours to charge it after u fill it that the battery's life will be shorter. My original lasted about 7-8 years and only died when i left the key on over night. If i get a new battery i wonder how i should do it....wait overnite after the fill, and how to charge it...just throw it on the battery tender Jr and be done with it or anything else i need to know? Never charged a new battery before and actually never even owned a charger.

If you're talking lead/acid then yes, let it stand for a period prior to charging and a slow low current charge is always better than a fast high current one.

I know that years ago when I rode around our country and spent some time in zero Celcius or below I had to keep my mobile phone in the sleeping bag with me overnight otherwise it refused to work.

Actually I was replying to the post only reading the first entry, My shame.

To me it sounded like the solenoid did not fully engage the pinion and therefore could not engage the starter.

Well, i'll see if it does this again and if so it looks pretty easy to pull the solenoid and clean it up. If that's it and that doesn't do it i'll get a new one. It's not gonna be ridden for a long while in this weather but it will remain on the trickle charge.

I recently replaced my 11year old battery .
Have always alternated a trickle charger weekly between 3 bikes.
Anyhow a week after the last start up I had nothing but Christmas lights and solenoid clicking.
Volts read 12.6 .but the amperage must have been shot.
